I haven’t gotten the card to render on Linux yet, AMD tech support ticket is in progress. The drivers with Windows 10 did allow me to render using Ryzen 5 integrated graphics (Vega 11), wx3100 GPU and 8 threads from 4 CPU cores – at the same time. That’s an IGP, GPU and 8-thread CPU actually reducing render times from ~30hrs (GPU only), to ~23hrs (CPU + IGP), to ~9hrs with them all working together, thanks to the newest Blender release 2.8. All this on only a 400W PSU.
Note: Windows system monitor doesn’t accurately report utilization so running the same render switching on and off combinations of processors to fine tune the best render tile size to use for final renders is a must. I found 512×512 with all 10 processors was the sweet spot for my Ryzen 5 rig.
For a low power multi-core parllel processing card, it’s phenomenal. I couldn’t find anything under $400 to match it. Rendering on its own one would be best to get a gaming card drawing 3-5x more Watts and wouldn’t need to bother with concurrency for rendering.
It’s finicky though, because the GPU is not necessarily faster than CPU or IGP processing, depending on the workload. To get the most out of the card it really pays to know the product. If you’re looking to buy something you can just trust to be your best option, get a more powerful graphics card. For professional low power workstations on a <$1,000 budget, this little bad boy can run happily for a decade without needing an upgrade if multipurpose application is the goal.
Although it performs markedly better than Vega 11 IGP alone (which it rightly should), it performs superbly with it in tandem, to my surprise. Obviously the wx3100 not meant for games but it can play HD without breaking a sweat, which is great because its built to run consistently heavy loads too.
With an mATX mobo (B450m) in a full sized case the form factor wasn't remotely an issue for me, but it's worth mentioning this card has a footprint smaller than my two sticks of ram fitted in their slots.
Although the display works in linux I haven't been able to leverage the GPU to graphics / audio filtering tasks yet.
Overall, if your use case is very specific: namely price, power, performance, in that order, this is AN option worth considering. You'll get way better performance for the price if all you're doing is rendering by purchasing a gaming card unless viewport performance matters more to you than final production render times. Machine learning AI, neural networks, or for a 4K media server that gets left on, this might be the best solution at the price point.
